Raise the Roof (May 3 - May 23)

I knew I was behind on posting pictures, but I just realized that even though I've posted some disaster shots from inside the house I haven't posted anything about the progress on the outside of the house since mid-April. 

By the end of the last post, we had the basement and kitchen framed out but nothing much done on the second floor yet.  The focus for the next couple of weeks was on the inside of the house so by May 3 they had only really finished up the sub-floor for the master bedroom but still no walls or roof.

They spent the next week or two taking down the chimney and preparing the inside of the original house to be ready for integrating with the new addition (pics and details on that here).  Finally on May 10 we saw the first signs of a new focus on the outside frame of the house.  The basic frame of the house was complete by the 11th, with the roof going up during the following week.  The sheeting and flashing were added by May 19, and the shingles were done by May 23.  Still no windows in the addition yet, but at least with walls and a roof we don't get flooded whenever it rains now.

The morning after that first huge storm and kitchen flood, Larry let us through the demising wall into the future master bedroom for the first time to help us feel a little better about things.  This picture was taken standing in the original doorway from the hall into the old master bedroom and looking through the hole in the demising wall to the new second floor area.

Standing out in the middle of the future master bedroom.  That section on the right that's covered in plastic is the little pod of the old upstairs bathroom.  The plastic helped keep it warm and dry through the winter while construction when on, but now that the ceiling of the bathroom is open to the outside through the attic and unfinished (at the time) roof the plastic didn't help too much.

All framing is done... and our house is looking *big*.  It's definitely noticeable as you come through the alley.  Not in an obnoxious way - it fits in with the houses around it - but it's very impressive.

May 19th, all sheeting and flashing is in place.  Just waiting on shingles now to complete the roof
