Simon's First Day of Kindergarten

How crazy is it that Simon is 5 years old and starting Kindergarten already! He was so excited to start that he ran all the way from home to school. Once we got into the playground we had about 15 minutes of play time before lineup, then some waiting in line for the kids to all file in. The waiting broke him - he got really nervous and by the time it was his line's turn he was clinging to me. I ended up having to pry him off me and hand him to the principal. But I was later told by one of the assistants that as soon as he got into the room he settled right down and ended up having a great day.

Simon will be in room 110 with Ms. Weisensel this year. There are 57 Kindergarteners at Hamilton and two classrooms. The rooms do some activities together and some separately. As a whole, Hamilton has about 450 students Pre-K through 8th grade.

Simon is in the YMCA after school program daily and will be joining 2 after school activities - Chess and Robotics. The YMCA program does sports, crafts and story times.

Simon is three years old!

It amazes me that Simon is three - in both an 'already' and in an 'only' way.

Some things about Simon now:

1. He sleeps in a toddler bed and has for a couple months. 
2. When we transitioned to toddler bed we also went for bed time potty training, which went amazingly smoothly. Only a handful of accidents in these past months.
3. Though he was day potty trained at 2 and rarely had accidents after the summer (so he went all fall and winter with almost no accidents), he has had a really hard time the past month and a half or so. Or maybe we've had the hard time? He has had 2-3 accidents a day. 
4. He is amazingly verbal. He listens, understands and repeats. Watch what you say around him!
5. He is not really shy around strangers, though he gets reserved in new situations. He always orders his own meals when we are at a counter or restaurant and charms every waiter/waitress that he interacts with.
6. He is definitely trying to assert himself. We hear a whole lot of whys and a definitely have some negotiation. With the Why's we have been trying to logic him through it. EX: Simon: Why is this garage so big?  Mama: What is a garage for? (sleeping cars) How many cars do you see in this garage? (one, two, .... lots) Does the garage need to be big or small to hold this many cars? (big) So why is the garage so big?
7. If you talk sternly to him or raise your voice at all, Simon immediately lashes out with an angry 'no'. In that mode he is pretty stubborn.
8. He is a very stubborn kid, which is good and bad.
9. He loves music and to dance. We have dance parties or rock out on guitar/harmonica pretty often.
10. Simon is very concerned about how we are doing. He is very proud of making us happy and after we have a rough patch he will always ask 'are you happy' over and over until you want to yell. Usually he is asking because he knows you are not happy. 
11. He is starting to like his sister and, especially when no one is looking, will be sweet to her. Not to say that he's willing to share his cars with her - don't talk crazy - just that he is willing to say goodnight or kiss/hug her.
12. Naps are a struggle. He is still taking a nap, but he really doesn't like it. When/if he does finally fall asleep he'll sleep for 2-3 hours. If he doesn't nap he's a grouch.
13. He sleeps with Kitty (formerly known as Jelly Cat) and Puppy (formally known as Chili Dog). Kitty holds the special place of honor and is the one that talks, is brought everywhere, babied, and is often a bad influence. She is also occasionally used as a bat or whip - which causes her to be removed from the room and he has to sleep without her.
14. There is a night-light clock in his room that changes to green when it is alright for him to wake up. It changes over at 6am. Simon is usually awake and at my side of the bed between 5 and 5:30. I take him to the potty, then sits in his room and reads until his clock turns green. 
15. He has started lying. Not big stuff yes, but he will occasionally come in and tell us his clock is green when it isn't yet. 
16. He is capable of pottying on his own, but for some reason usually just won't do it unless someone goes with him.
17. He loves all sports and is surprisingly good at them. We have to stop playing baseball in the back yard because he hits 3/4 of the balls into the neighbor's yard. (Alternately we could just get more balls)
18. He is really is a sweet boy though he has been having some temper tantrums lately. He will hit the table or wall and say 'no!'. Sadly Jenn often gets the brunt of his temper and he has even hit her and bitten her once. We have been zero tolerance with it, but punishment is hard since he now laughs at time outs.
19. Because time outs aren't working, everything 'fun' has been removed from his room - all books, couch pillows, extra blankets and toys. The room is no longer a place to play. He is allowed a book to read in the morning when he wakes up before his light turns green and we read books still before nap and bed. However any books are a privilege and we will remove the 3-4 books that migrate in (nothing makes a mom feel meaner than to hear her kid screaming from his bedroom, MAMA PLEASE BRING ME BACK MY BOOKS! PLEASE PUH-LEASE.) 
20. Due to all above, bed and nap times have had to become more strict as well. He gets one warning and if he doesn't stay in bed then kitty and puppy have to come out. 
21. He is totally psyched to go to school in the fall. We have been going on play dates and he remembers and will randomly talk about his teacher, Ms. Zyrel (like Tyrell but with a Z)
22. Simon still has very little screen time, but we are not nearly as strict about it. He occasionally watches Daniel Tiger. The only movie he watches is Cars.  (Lillian is not allowed to watch, so it has to happen during her nap.)
23. Simon is totally obsessed with the x-box controllers, which he never gets to use. On very rare occasion as a special reward Alan will play a running/jumping video game with him. 
24. We introduced games on the iPad for the airplane ride to Arizona and he remembers them quite clearly. He will often ask for the iPad, though is usually disappointed. When he does get it he has about an hours worth of focus before he wants to go outside and play (same with TV or video games with Alan).

Simon at 2 and a half years old

Amazingly our Simon is already two and a half years old. I don't know where the time has gone. I feel so lucky to have such an amazing little man as my son.

Some things about Simon at 2.5:

1. Goes to bed at 6 and wakes up around 6:30, naps from 12-2 on a 'normal' day. We are a little more flexible with his times than we used to be, but he still really likes his routine.
2. He has an amazing vocabulary - talks circles around most of his peers. 
3. He speaks in full sentences and if you correct his tense than he will usually remember for next time.
4. Sadly he doesn't fit into my (Emily's) lap very well anymore - with his head on my shoulders he needs to fold his legs up to fit when I'm sitting.
5. Loves trains, matchbox cars and Duplos (big legos). 
6. Goes to the library every Friday and gets a good set of books to read every week. Doesn't read constantly like he did before, but reads for cuddle time and during independent play. 
7. Has started watching some tv. His favorite show is Blues Clues and favorite movie is Cars.
8. He feeds himself with fork/knife for his meals and will eat most everything except veggies. Those he only eats if he is conned or bribed into it - though he usually likes them when he eats it.
9. He usually sits in a big boy chair (not the booster seat). It takes many reminders to get him to sit straight and not hop out of the chair every time he is distracted, but he loves it. 
10. He is not allergic to any thing (so far!) 
11. Simon loves to cook. He regularly helps make breakfast (scrambled eggs or oatmeal), muffins, makes pizza with Jenn and helps with cookies and whatever else we let him stand on his 2 step stool and help with.
12. Simon sets the table and helps clear it. Though it is best if he just does it with his plastic plates since he doesn't quite reach the sink and so things have a tendency to get tossed into the sink.
13. He still drinks only water and whole milk - though every once in a while we'll let him have some of our orange or grapefruit juice. 
14. Loves to sing. He will regularly burst into song when he's riding in the backseat by himself. His favorite song is 'We're not going to take it' (which he sings only with Alan) but he sings everything. He has a great memory for lyrics and will pick up the chorus of a new song quite quickly. Christmas carols were quite popular in this house! 
15. For bedtime routine Mama sings Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Daddy sings Lion Sleeps Tonight and Jenn sings Edelweiss.  
16. He is getting independent, asking to do things on his own. Today he told me he did AWESOME at brushing his teeth so I didn't need to help (I did anyway, back teeth are hard).
17. He doesn't eat much sugar. He'll have a cookie or two when he bakes them, of course whatever dough he sneaks when I'm not looking, and also whatever Auntie Colleen gives him when they're out (it's what Aunts are for apparently).
18. He loves hanging with his Aunties and Grandparents. 
19. Spends every Tuesday with Karmen and Tyler. Even though he cries as he walks out the door every time, by the time he's in the car he's good and he always has tons of happy stories when he gets home in the evening.
20. He is great at counting to 13. For some reason 14 and 15 trip him up and he often forgets them, but picks up at 16. He is able to show the number of fingers that something is and we are working on 'one more' making a new number and 'one less' making a new number. 
21. He identifies the capital letters of the alphabet consistently and has about half the lower case letters. 
22. Every night Daddy puts him to bed he asks 'Puppy, what are you going to dream about?' and Simon says 'Simon', then Daddy asks 'Kitty, what are you going to dream about?" and Simon says 'Simon', then Daddy asks 'Simon, what are you going to dream about?' and Simon, often laughing so hard he can hardly get it out, says 'Puppy and Kitty' and Daddy says, to more laughter 'IT'S A BIG CIRCLE DREAM!'
23. We have pretty much ditched the stroller and tricycle completely and he just walks everywhere. 
24. He is potty trained during the day, though we still have to be careful about asking because he is not great at speaking up. Oddly he is really good at telling us about pooping, but terrible about telling us about pee.
25. At night he is still in diapers (Pampers #5s!). He is still in his crib for 12-13 hours a night so I don't think it's fair to expect him to hold it that long. Once he gets into a toddler bed then we will start night time potty training. 
26. He loves to run and kick balls. He is so interested in sports. He loves baseball and football especially. He will run and get tackled by invisible people. I have seen him run and accidentally trip and laugh it off by calling it a tackle.
27. He asked Santa for a football helmet and we cheated by getting him a miniature one so he couldn't wear it. 
28. He is rarely shy at restaurants anymore, instead we talk about what he is going to order and he is great about asking them for it. He wins over every server we have!
29. Simon is great about saying thank you and will do so frequently and without prompting. Please often needs a reminder, but he is happy to say it.
30. He is very routine oriented and if you deviate from his routine he will remind you. 'Now a quick lunch then nap.'
31. He is great at independent play. You just have to ask him if he can go play by himself for a while. If he wants to play with you then he'll come and ask. 'Daddy, you play trains with me?'
32. When Lillian cries Simon will look at me and say, 'You feed her, Mama' or 'She's crying. You check on her!'
33. He has started saying "I'm a little bit scared." Usually in reaction to Lillian crying, which she has been doing quite fiercely when we snot suck her nose because of her cold.

2 Years with Jenn

November 7th marked the 2 year anniversary of Jenn joining our family. The past two years have been full of ups and downs for all of us, but always Simon has had Jenn's loving consistency.  We're so grateful to have her be such a big part of Simon's life and help him grow into the amazing kid that he has become. We are looking forward to the coming years with Jenn and Simon... and Lillian as well!

Jenn's first day - November 7th, 2011

Simon at 2 years

Can you believe that it's been two years already? I am amazed every time I look at Simon how smart and funny he is, and he's only 2! Imagine how amazing he'll be in another 5 or even 10 years?

Here is a list of some of the things Simon is doing now, in no particular order.

1. He can identify most colors consistently. Sometimes he'll still say one wrong, but if you say 'that's not right, try again', he'll get it.
2. He can identify most letters of the alphabet by looking at the letter written down.
3. He can sing most of the alphabet song to you (or to his stuffed animals).
4. Can count to 11, though he usually ends with 8 still. It goes like this: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6-7-8, 9, 10, 11, 8!
5. His favorite stuffed animals are 'puppy' aka Chili Dog and 'meow' aka Jelly Cat. He will talk to them, sing to them in the morning and tuck them in at night. He particularly loves puppy and likes to give him hugs and kisses and tell him secrets.
6. Favorite secret is to whisper ABCDEF to you. Then laugh uproariously. 
7. He goes for walks without his stroller or a carrier pretty regularly. He can walk to Whole Foods, sit in the cart to shop and walk home no problem. Lots of reminders to hold hands and of course we are walking slowly.
8. He runs fast. Way faster than you'd think those little legs should go. In a short dash he is faster than I am. 
9. Before he runs away from you, or before he does anything he knows he isn't supposed to do, he looks at you with a sly, impish face and pauses to think about what he's doing before deciding to do it.  
10. He is totally in love with trains. Especially the CTA trains we see all the time. One of his favorite excursions is to take a train ride. To the loop, to the park, or even just back and forth - any destination so long as he gets to be on the train. Loves playing with his train table and trains, very commonly he will request 'Mama, Play trains with you?'.
11. He is very reasonable. If he is starting to tantrum you can get down on eye level with him and say 'don't cry, tell me what you want and we will see what we can do.' Then he (usually) will visibly take hold of himself, take a couple breaths and choke out what he wants in a pretty darn good impression of normal. When he is obviously trying so hard to talk to us and not cry there are very few things that I won't give in to, hope he doesn't figure that out any time soon. 
12. When he whines, he will sometimes catch himself and look at you and say, 'no whine.'
13. He is walking up and down stairs mostly on his own, but we still strongly encourage holding the railing or a hand since wiping out is not uncommon.  As long as he's paying attention he's fine, but he's very easily distracted on the way up or down.
14. He does not dress himself or put on his own shoes. He has made some moves that he is interested in trying, but he gives up after a second or two. Most interesting thing is attempting to put on socks, which he can get on his hands but not on his feet yet.
15. He colors well, can draw a recognizable circle but other shapes aren't quite there yet.
16. He talks constantly, can say everything we say. He speaks in full sentences and frequently ties a couple sentences together. He drops the connector words and sometimes we have to ask him to enunciate better for us to understand what he's saying. D's and T's sound similar and S's are a little slurred. In general anyone he speaks to can understand what he is saying. 
17. Two common words he still has trouble with: he says 'agaig' instead of again, and 'goog' instead of good.  
18. He is shy around strangers and usually whispers if he manages to say anything. If you encourage him to say it loudly he will though. (Like saying thank you to a waiter or teller or something.) He gets more comfortable with time and even from beginning of meal to the end you can tell the difference when talking to waiters/waitresses.
19. He is confident in his vocabulary and what he's trying to say. He'll correct you if you misunderstand him, repeating with emphasis or rephrasing until you figure it out. 
20. Has weekly play dates with Kyla (3 years), Baby Kinsey (6 months) and Joanna (nanny). Those just ended because they are moving to the suburbs, but he loves them and will frequently be heard saying their names over and over quietly to himself.
21. Goes to bed at 6:30 pm, usually plays with/sings to his animals for 30 minutes and is asleep around 7pm. Wakes up around 6 am, but patiently waits for us to shower and get ready. We get him out of bed at 6:30am. He naps from 12-2. Though it isn't uncommon for him to nap longer if he's had a busy day, or (sadly) to skip naps on weekends when both parents are home and there is lots going on.
22. He eats well. We don't cut grapes, but do remind him to bite them in half. He needs only one reminder then does it for the rest of the meal. He will eat what we are eating, but refuses green leafy things (spinach, lettuce, broccoli, etc). Even picked the basil off of a piece of chicken - though Alan got him over that by having him do a taste test of basil and some other spices. Still doesn't like tomatoes. Loves yogurt, applesauce, fruit and any kind of cracker. Loves eating Kix or bagels for special breakfast. Also really enjoys peas, lima beans, corn, carrots, sweet potatoes, baking potatoes, any kind of cheese.
23. Drinks only milk and water, no juices.
24. Doesn't really eat processed sugar. Has Cheerios or Kix for cereal, will occasionally have part of a cookie or some ice cream if we are eating it around him. (And a cupcake for his birthday!)
25. Loves 'cooking' on his 2 step stool (aka "New Stool"). I give him a couple bowls and measuring spoons and some flour and he dumps and scoops and pours. He makes quite the floury mess, but is so happy it is worth it. 
26. Loves being tickled. Will tickle you (usually from far away) by wiggling his fingers at you and saying 'kickle kickle!'. When you tickle him he'll laugh and say no! or all done! then when you stop he'll look at you and say in a plaintive tone: more?
27. He narrates what goes on around him a little. Saying things like 'mama laugh' or 'Jenn talk you'.  I think he's just trying to keep a grip on what's going on around him when there are lots of adults around. Even when he's crying, he'll stop and look thoughtful and then say "Me cry" like he's a little surprised that's happening.  
28. Doesn't quite have a grip on pronouns yet. He often refers to himself as 'you'. As in 'Pick up you.'  That mostly happens with being held.  He says "Holdju" when he wants to be picked up... I'm not sure he knows that it's not one word. 
29. Has very limited screen time. If he is at the end of his rope we'll watch an episode of Blues Clues, Sesame Street or Yo Gabba Gabba, but it is once every few weeks. We do watch TV while cutting hair. Almost no game time on Phones/iPad, though he knows there are games on them and definitely asks.
30. He loves looking at pictures of himself. That's what he uses phones for most. Whenever he sees you taking pictures, after he poses ("CHEESE!") he'll say "me look?" and run over to check out the screen. 
31. Skypes regularly with long distance family. So frequently that he doesn't realize all phones don't show picture. He will point the regular phone at things to show the person on the other end what he is talking about.
32. Cannot resist touching buttons. As a result we almost always hang up on whoever is on the other end of the phone if Simon's holding the phone.
33. He has really started using his imagination recently. He will pretend to pick up a character from a book and hold it and talk to it. Or help someone move the boxes in the book. Or have an imaginary puppy talking to him telling him jokes (which he totally fake laughs to).  
34. One of his favorite games lately is "Pet Store", where we line up stuffed animals on the edge of a table and then use his toy shopping cart and a small shopping bag to pretend we're shopping for pets.  He "beeps" them on the table to ring them up before putting them in the bag, and he always charges ten dollars.  If the beeper gets broken and says 'boop' then he will fix it for you.
35. He is very patient about doing things he doesn't want to do. For example, the other day we went to the grocery store. When we got there, he looked at us and asked to go home and play. We said we had to shop. We were there for maybe 30 minutes and a couple times he reminded us he wanted to go home, but all in reasonable voices. We explained we were shopping for food to eat so couldn't leave yet. He was super good about it though was very happy to leave. You can only push him that way when he has slept well, his patience is much lower if he is tired.
36. Generally he is a lot of fun to be around. We laugh and play and really enjoy each other's company.  He'll say things that he knows are silly to try and make us laugh. 
37. Still really likes to read, but is particular about who is turning pages and who is holding the book. He will read on his own, but doesn't read out loud to you yet.  When you ask him to read the book to you, sometimes he'll hold it up with the pages facing you and turn the pages for you. 
38. He has many of his books memorized, so he'll finish the last word or two of each sentence if you pause to let him.  He can sometimes do this even after only reading a book one or two times. Even when not reading, if you quote a line or two from a book that he's read before he'll get a big smile and tell you the name of the book that it's from. 
39. We started and will tell Simon's Story pretty regularly at night before bed. It is the story of what Simon did that day, which he helps me tell since most days I am not with him all day. He has been getting more and more helpful with it the past couple months.
40. Loves being told the stories of Goldilocks and the Three Bears and the Three Little Pigs.
41. Will give great hugs. Sometimes he'll run from across the room and throw himself into your arms and give you a huge hug. So wonderful.
42. Will usually still run into someone's arms when he hears someone on the steps, in an excited 'who's coming?' sort of way. He does it less frequently though and I feel like it might end soon.
43. Sits in a booster seat on a chair at home and in a high chair at restaurants. He is a little too short to not have a booster and a little too easily distracted to not be buckled in. 
44. Thankfully cannot unbuckle yet, though is a rock star at buckling. He understands how to unbuckle, he just can't quite get his hands to do it right yet - or maybe he doesn't have the grip yet.
45. No pacifier and no thumbs. We're all done with the suckling stage. He sometimes asks about his "paci" and we ask him where it went so he remembers that he put it in the trash.
46. Knows he has a little sister in Mama's belly. That she will be a baby and that babies cry and that's ok. 
47. Loves water, especially scooping and dumping it. We haven't gone swimming yet this year, but play outside in the little wading pool on a regular basis. 
48. Really getting into climbing at the park, and still loves to swing. 
49. Learning how to throw a ball. Doesn't always go the direction he wants but he's got quite an arm! Also learning to catch, he's getting it about half the time, which is my rate too. 
50. He is getting much more independent and likes to do things on his own, including happily playing by himself for 30 min or more.
51. Loves to be included in things and feel helpful.  If you ask him to come help you with something he'll almost always come running over, and seems really proud when you tell him afterwards how big of a help he was. 
52. He's getting pretty good with manners.  He still often needs to be prompted to say Please (he understands what you mean when you say "How do you ask nicely?") and Thank You, but he's starting to say it on his own sometimes too. 
53. Says "Bless you" when you sneeze. 

Reflecting on 9 months

I look back on the pictures of Simon over Christmas and in the hospital and am blown away that only three short months have passed (pictures at the end of the post).  In these past three months he has started rolling over, gained a ton more control of all his motor skills, started sitting up on his own and then quickly moved to pulling himself up to a standing position. He crawls like a little racer and has started to go over/under obstacles, which is much more fun than going around even if he does 'get' that going around them is possible. He has started really understanding cause and effect and will pick up on new games (peak-a-boo, a sound (buzzing and moving fingers) then response (tickle!), and even sneaking up on him around the sides of the island) quickly. He has started to figure out the baby signs we are using and will regularly tell us that he wants 'more' when he is still hungry.  The sign is often associated with crying, but he gets that he's telling us something. He is so good natured and still very patient with us. He rarely cries unless there is a reason - he is hungry, dirty or just too tired - and if one of those things is wrong and you pick him up, he'll stop crying because he trusts you to fix it. He is very serious when exposed to new things, he spends some time quietly observing and adjusting. He loves new people, but has to spend a few minutes checking them out before he gives them his irresistible four toothed smile. Once he is comfortable his babbling starts.  Usually it is just fun noises sliding through different notes, but occasionally his chatting sounds like real words though no meaning is behind it yet we still love it. He does imitate noises which is a terrific game for everyone within hearing distance. My very favorite is growling. Give a little growl to Simon and he'll look at you, smile, then give you the most adorable mini-growl that you've ever heard.

One Month Since Surgery

It has been one month since the surgery. One month ago we were sitting in the hospital waiting for little Simon to get out of the operating room and I was so scared. He came out of the surgery that day recovering and he is doing so well. He has gotten strength back in his legs what seems to me amazingly quickly when I think about it. Only one month! On January 3rd Simon couldn't roll from back to front - now he only sleeps on his tummy no matter how many times we roll him back onto his back. Also in the past month he has learned how to get up into crawling position on his own... and how to crawl backward. He also will get into his baby yoga pose - downward dog. With his arms in crawling position and his legs straight so his butt is high in the air and he's looking at his own knees through his arms. It's adorable. And of course he is standing so much better - balancing on his own with only a finger or two to help or completely by himself on his standing toy. How did all that happen in only a single month!?

His incision is healing wonderfully and he loves having it rubbed - but who wouldn't like a doctor ordered, daily backrub! We are so lucky that he is so healthy and happy and seems completely unfazed by the surgery.

He is so strong. He can easily stand holding on to only one finger. He does try to take a step then and will sometimes fall over, but he's getting there really quickly. I think just a few more weeks until he's pulling himself up.

6 Months Old

Our young man is six months old today. Man how time flies. We took a couple pictures special of his newest skill - in crawl position. There is a little rocking, but mostly when you put him on his hands and knees he just hangs out and checks out the world from the new vantage point

4 months already!

Today is Simon's four month doctor appointment. How is he possibly that old already? He's changed so much in those four months. I can hardly believe it was such a short time ago that he was our tiny little lump of a baby. Now he has so much personality! He is super strong and loves standing more than he likes sitting. He also is really smiley and always up for laughing at his parents' silly faces.  This morning to prep for the doctor, the little guy worked his arms with some pushups (look at the fun he was having), then did some standing around and finally rested up at Safari Cup. Doctor was hard, four shots for vaccines, but he's doing great now - sleeping it off. 

At the 2 month appointment he was in the 50th percentile for height and weight (measured from his actual birthday of June 16, not his due date which apparently some doctors do). At 4 months he's now around 55% for height and 45% for weight:14 pounds and 2 ounces, 24 and 3/4 inches long, with a 41 cm head. Pretty perfect if you ask me!

Poor Little Boy! (aka 2 Month Dr Visit)

Simon had his 2 month doctor visit on Friday and got a weigh in. I thought he was close to 15 pounds. He almost doubled his weight the first month so I figured he'd come close to doing the same in his second. He didn't. He gained on average an ounce a day - which is nothing to scoff at I suppose. He is now 11 pounds and 13 oz (at 1 month he was 9lbs 8oz). He is now in the 50th percentile in both height and weight.

Unfortunately, his 2 month doctor visit is also when he get a first round of vaccines. Four as shots and one orally. The poor guy held up to the shots quite nicely. (It was more traumatizing to dad who had to hold him while the nurse gave him the shots.) A few horrified moments when he tried to figure out what was going on, a couple unhappy shouts and then nursing and his first shots were done without much drama. Or so we thought...
