Due Date

This is the day.  Simon Emory Basque was due to join the world on July 3rd. Instead he came seventeen days ago. What a great seventeen days it has been.

He was born at 6lbs 12oz and dropped down to 6lbs when we brought him home. Now he is a whopping 7 pounds 8 ounces and 20 inches long. Completely still within the range of what a baby could be when he is inside. I look at this little monkey and see how alert he is, watch him learn to focus on new things, see him trying to figure out his legs and arms and strengthening his neck and just can't begin to imagine that we might still not have met him yet because he could still be in me! What a crazy, mind boggling miracle that a person could come out of another person.

Alan and I have loved watching all the ways that Simon has changed in just that short time. His neck is so strong he can hold it up on his own often now and definitely can move it around enough to surprise the unwary. His eyes have started focusing on specific things - people that talk or things that move. Alan got a couple newborn toys that are high contrast and rattle and Simon loves staring at them. He hasn't coordinated his legs and arms yet, but he moves them all the time and hates to have his arms confined. (We learned that the after a lot of screaming when we were trying to swaddle him; that is why his arms are always free in pictures.) He makes the cutest poses with his hands on and around his face and he makes a million little old man faces that Alan and I could sit and watch for hours. And usually do!

Alan goes back to work on Tuesday, July 5th. Simon and I will definitely miss him.
