On Saturday afternoon Simon and I walked to Southport, over mountains of snow and through deep snow-melt puddles to Growing Smiles, the home of Dr Ashley the Dentist. About half way there we had a small slip that resulted in Simon on his back in a big puddle, not hurt, just very very wet and dirty. Happily he didn't care one little bit because I didn't have a spare outfit for him and Alan couldn't easily pack up the baby into the car to drop off a new pair of pants.
When we got to the dentist's office Simon went immediately to the play area to play. I had planned for us to arrive about 20 minutes before our appointment time so he had a chance to get acclimated to the space. He had some time to play, but they pulled us in early to the appointment. They were very efficient and we were out of there, happy and cavity free by 1:15.

They have a tv on the ceiling that above the chair to distract kids. After pointing it out, Simon ignored the TV in favor of all the buttons and equipment hanging around the room. While the dental assistant was getting his history Simon was pressing every button in the room. He knew how the chair worked and what was in every drawer by the time Dr Ashley the Dentist arrived. He was amazing with Dr Ashley and let her count all his teeth, check for cavities (he had none) and he didn't even put up a fuss when it was time to floss. Simon loved flossing, though he thought it felt weird. We are supposed to try to floss every day, but the dentist said even a couple times a week would be great for his age. [In the two evenings we have had since then Simon has LOVED flossing. Our routine is I brush his teeth, then he brushes his teeth, I floss his teeth, then he flosses. Both days he has offered to floss my teeth with the same floss... so far I've passed on that kind offer. :) ]
The dentist was amazed at how cooperative Simon was and because Simon was so great he got both a sticker AND a token to buy a bouncy ball or ring from the machine in the front of the office. He got a bouncy ball which he totally loves.
