Big Dig in Chicago

In which Contractor Larry and his Steam Shovel dig a giant pit in our backyard.
From this point on a lot of the construction pictures are all taken from the same place: standing in the doorway of the basement.  That's because we now have no way to get to (or even see) our backyard from anywhere else.  We have no rear-facing windows left in the house, the walkway along the side of the house is chained and locked (to prevent anyone from falling into the pit) and we have a big construction fence blocking the driveway from the back.

These pictures were taken over the course of about a week, from 2/15/11-2/21/11

What's left of our breaker box

The next day the edges of the pit were cleaned up to prepare for laying the foundation

That's a 6-foot ladder, which should help to give a sense of how deep the pit is

  1. Just make sure they leave a way to get the shovel out when the dust settles. Or make peace with Larry living in your basement and spending all his time talking to your furnace.
